Description
Australia is the world’s largest island nation with a coastline of infinite variety and stunning natural beauty, surrounded by rocky shores and treacherous waters. In the 1 9th century, the alarming number of shipwrecks in these seas clearly spelled the need for permanent warning lights to provide a safe journey and welcoming lights for ships.
Australia’s first lighthouse was completed in 1818 and thus began an amazing history of the construction of these towering structures – marvels of architecture and building skill in some of Australia’s most remote, unspoilt and inhospitable places.
This programme explores many of these isolated beacons of hope uncovers the fascinating, romantic and dramatic stories of the lighthouse keepers who manned these desolate outposts. Their tales of danger, endeavour, ingenuity and determination describe an era that has now passed into history, but the folklore and memories of the Australian lighthouses and their keepers will live forever.
