Since its inception in 1980 State of Origin has provided the game with some of its greatest moments, as a generation of fans have borne witness to incredible feats of skill and courage. During this time there have been few sides that could truly claim a dynasty; New South Wales were looking to continue their recent dominance over Queensland in the 2006 series. Leading with seconds remaining on the clock, there came a moment that will forever be frozen in time: Maroons skipper Darren Lockyer pounced on a wayward pass inside the Blues’ red zone and plunged over the line to level the scores. Ice-cool kicker Clinton Schifcocske then landed the clutch conversion and one of the most dominant dynasties in recent sporting history was born.
The 2006-13 Maroons squad swept all before them, winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive series in 2009. But like the champion sides of history the hunger remained, looking invincible the Maroons dominated the series in 2010 putting NSW to the sword and claiming a series whitewash. 2011 saw the farewell of a Maroons legend, Darren Lockyer had announced his retirement, the kid from Roma who started the dynasty all those years ago. The series was level going into the all-important game III, but an early Maroons onslaught all but sealed the game and the series, and Origin farewelled one of its greatest sons. The sign of a great team is the strength of its bench and with the retirement of Lockyer, Cooper Cronk got his chance in 2012, again it was a tight physical series that came down to a single kick. From 40 meters out skipper Cameron Smith fired a dummy half pass to Cronk who snapped a sublime field goal securing a remarkable seventh consecutive series win. The Maroons legacy was cemented in 2013 with a remarkable eighth straight series victory, a feat not likely to be repeated in a generation.
