When ‘Bubber’ Reeves (Robert Redford) escapes from a Texas prison, the mood in his nearby hometown reaches boiling point. sheriff Calder (Marlon Brando) wants to capture Reeves alive, but most of the townsfolk are hell-bent on delivering vigilante retribution. Influential businessman Val Rogers (E.G. Marshall) has stoked tensions–he wants Reeves caught quickly, through any means possible. Rogers fears what the escapee might do if he comes face-to-face with his son, who is romantically involved with Reeves’ wife (Jane Fonda). Sheriff Calder might be the law–but in this town gripped by chaos and division, justice is firmly in the hands of the mob.
